What is the best time of year to trim my tree?

While trees can be trimmed year-round, the ideal time to do tree trimming for most species is in the middle of winter when the tree has been dormant for the appropriate period of time based on the surrounding environment. If this tree is trimmed in the middle of summertime, based on the species, it could be expected to potentially sprout new growth undesirably. The worst time of year to trim most trees is in the spring when the tree is sprouting all its fresh canopy for the upcoming season.

Can my tree be topped and still be healthy?

With the exception of crêpe myrtle trees, orchard trees (apple, orange, etc) and Bradford pear trees, topping a tree will cause a tree to begin to decay from the top down. All new growth that may spring from where the cuts were made will have unhealthy attachment points and ultimately turn into tree risk situations. In general, if a tree company offers to top your tree, please run away from them. They are not professional arborists looking out for the best interest of your tree.

What percentage of my tree can I have trimmed without harming the tree?

This is an excellent question with numerous factors based on the species and maturity of the tree. We always recommend having a professional arborist come inspect the tree to give the best answer. In general, a tree should never be trimmed more than 30% over a 12 month period of time, but often times it is wise to trim less than this amount.
