Tree Removal Service With the 10 Tree Rule in Mind

Powder Springs was founded as Springville in 1838 and renamed in 1859 for its seven mineral springs, whose water turns the surrounding sand black like gunpowder. Today the city mixes older streets near downtown with newer subdivisions, wooded lots and creeks running out toward the county line. Many of those lots still hold tall pines and mature hardwoods. When one of them becomes a hazard, you need a tree removal service that can take it down safely and keep you on the right side of the city’s tree rules.

Restoration Tree Care is a family-owned, insured tree company based in Cobb County. We handle removal of dead, leaning and unwanted trees for homeowners and property managers, and our own crew does the job from the estimate to the cleanup.

How the City Handles Tree Removal

The city’s Tree Removal guidelines are simple once you know the dividing line:

  • Fewer than 10 trees. No permit is required, but the lot still has to meet the city’s canopy coverage requirement, and any specimen tree removed has to be replaced.
  • 10 trees or more. A land disturbance permit is required, along with a plan for erosion control and a landscaping plan showing replacement trees.
  • Dead or hazard trees. No review is required, but the city recommends keeping your own records in case Code Enforcement asks about the removal later.

When an application is needed, the city asks for a site plan showing which trees come out and where new ones go, photos of the trees, and an arborist’s letter for any specimen tree. Review usually takes 5 to 10 business days.

Trees That Have to Stay

Some trees can’t be removed no matter how many you’re taking down. Under the city’s rules, that includes trees required by zoning, trees or landscaping approved on a plat, and trees in a stream buffer or floodplain. If your lot backs up to a creek or was built with a required buffer, it’s worth checking before you plan the work. We’ll look at where each tree stands during the estimate and point out anything that may need the city’s input.

Specimen Trees and Canopy Coverage

Specimen trees are the large, high value trees the city wants to protect. The city’s application walks through how to tell whether a tree qualifies. If one has to come out, the replacement planting has to equal twice the canopy of the tree removed, or twice its canopy at maturity. If a removal leaves your lot short of the required canopy, the city will ask for replanting or additional trees.

That’s one reason we start every job with an honest look at the tree. Our arborist services can tell you whether pruning or trimming would make a big tree safe enough to keep, which can save you the replacement cost.

Removal Day

On the day of the job, a climber works from the top down and the crew lowers each limb and trunk section on ropes, so nothing lands on the house, the fence or the neighbor’s yard. If a tree can’t be reached safely that way, a crane may be used. We chip the brush, haul the wood and rake the yard before we go. Stump grinding happens during the same appointment if you want the stump gone, which also clears the way for any replacement trees.

Storm Damage

Summer storms and the occasional ice storm bring trees down across west Cobb. If one lands on your house, car or driveway, call us. Our emergency crews respond around the clock and start by getting the weight off the structure. If a tree is touching a power line, stay clear and call the utility first. Take photos before and after, since dead and hazard tree removals are the ones the city asks you to document yourself.

What Homeowners Ask Us About the City’s Rules

How many trees can I remove without a permit?

Fewer than 10. Below that number, no permit is needed, but your lot still has to meet the canopy requirement, and specimen trees still need replacement. At 10 or more, a land disturbance permit is required.

What is a specimen tree?

It’s a large, valuable tree the city protects with extra replacement rules. The city’s tree removal application explains how to tell whether a tree qualifies, and removing one requires an arborist’s letter and replacement planting equal to twice its canopy.

Should I keep records when I remove a dead or hazardous tree?

Yes. Dead and hazard trees don’t need city review, but the city recommends keeping your own records in case Code Enforcement asks. Photos of the tree’s condition before it comes down are the simplest proof.

Which trees on my lot can’t be removed?

Trees required by zoning, trees or landscaping approved on your plat, and trees in a stream buffer or floodplain. If you’re not sure whether one of those applies, the city can clarify before work begins.

How long does the city take to review an application?

The city says review may take 5 to 10 business days. If your project needs an application, plan the removal date with that in mind.

Restoration Tree Care went through the tops of every tree in our property. We have A LOT of trees and they didn’t miss one searching for dead limbs. I feel so much safer having my family out in our woods now. Their pricing is very reasonable! They are “my people” from now on!

They did a great job removing a big sweetgum and a pine tree from the backyard. The crew worked carefully around the house, and yard, dropped the trees safely, and kept everything under control. They really took their time on the large sections and tripple checking their cuts. Professional work, solid cleanup. Would use them again and recommend them to anyone. My neighbor is already using them!

Thomas and his team were extremely easy to work with. I think the whole process from introduction to job complete was right at a week. We had a few trees removed and a lot of trees trimmed. They were extremely cautious about our property and insuring that none of our outdoor furniture or orchard trees were damaged as they removed both limbs and trunks of surrounding trees.

It's not often that a single word speaks volumes but that is absolutely the case with the owner of Restoration Tree Care, Thomas. It's not I know a guy. It's I know the guy. My parents had to have four trees taken down in their backyard. A crane was brought in as two of the trunks had to be lifted over their house... And yes, it was one of those "eek" moments. Thomas tied off and sectioned the two largest trees personally. Even with the drizzle throughout the longer than anticipated day, Thomas and his crew were professional and honest from start to finish. When I asked my dad if he was satisfied with the work he told me "Yes, definitely! With the exception of the trees being gone, you can't even tell they were here!" The right crew, the right equipment, the right guy!! Thank you, Restoration Tree service for changing an "eek" moment to a "phew" moment!!
